It's party time

Just popping in quickly this morning, before I head off to my art class's Christmas party. It's been suggested (very unfairly in my opinion) that there's more eating and chatting than painting taking place at my Monday class, but for today at least that's what it's all about. The presents are wrapped, the food all prepared, and we're all set to go. Oh, and to get into the spirit of the day, here's a quick pic of my tree - I've gone for a turquoise and silver theme this year.

(although it looks like gold and turquoise at night!)

Sorry for being a little awol lately, but this rain has played havoc with my phone lines, and my internet connection has been fickle at best. But on a brighter note, guess what - the pool is being finished as we speak. The last of the interior work will be done this morning, and the water tanker is on standby to start filling her up. Hallelujah!

Have a great day everyone,

Byron beauty

I've always had a soft spot for Byron Bay and the surrounding areas. Besides boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia, the area is bordered by rolling green hills and quirky little country towns. This month, Inside Out magazine featured a lovely white beach house, with a touch of the Caribbean thrown in for good measure. It probably comes as no surprise to hear that the story was styled by our very own Shannon Fricke, and photographed by Prue Ruscoe. Are you ready for some Byron magic?

We've finally had some decent weather, and at long last, work has resumed on the pool. The pool guy put in a solid six hours yesterday (!!!) so hopefully it will be all done and dusted next week. But you know, when I see the floods in Wagga (thinking of you, Katrina!) I remind myself to stop whining. Having the pool finished is rather insignificant in the whole scheme of things, you know? As is having the letter 'i' pack it in on your keyboard :)

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Holiday haven

I don't know what it is about the houses on Sydney's Northern Beaches, but I can't get enough of their particular style of beach chic. It might be the combination of lashings of white, timber floorboards, sandstone....oh, and maybe a killer view or two. Absolute perfection. Take this little number for example - 'Norma House'. Could you think of a better place to spend the summer?

So if you're in the market for a swanky spot to while away the summer, you can pop on over here to make a booking. Just make sure you save a room for me!

Vintage school chalkboard

Years ago, I was lucky enough to stumble across an old school blackboard, complete with easel, at a garage sale. I snapped it up for the princely sum of $5, and I've used the easel ever since in my studio. The chalkboard, however, has sat in my shed until yesterday. I've decided it's time to have a more organised system for keeping track of all my paintings on order, and as I'm a very visual person, I need to see it in black and white.

When I first bought it, I'd planned to paint the frame, but now I think I rather like it in all its shabby glory. I'm planning on hanging it on the wall, so that I can still use the easel for my larger artworks, and the chalkboard will be used as a visual diary of sorts. And as it's about to rain yet again, once I've finished my orders for the day, I'll get back to work on a painting I'm actually keeping for myself, which is something of a rarity now days. I have a large, blank wall behind the sofa in our family room, and I've earmarked a 3' x 6' canvas for the space. Once it's presentable I'll give you a look, but for now I can tell you it will be something of a hybrid between these:

'Nautilus'
Mixed media on canvas (sold)

 'Drift'
Mixed media on canvas (sold)

'Drift II"
Mixed media on canvas

(you can check out more of my paintings over here and here, if you're interested)

...with a few surprises thrown in. Oh, and before I forget, the lovely Mara, of Home Shabby Home, recently shared some pics of her new home office space. And hanging on the wall is my painting, 'Fresco'! Take a look:

By the way, I also wanted to thank everyone who sent birthday and anniversary wishes my way, you're very sweet :) We spent a lovely couple of days up Noosa way, and in spite of the terrible weather, it was such a lovely break.

Right, back to the coal mines for me. Have a great day everyone,

Sneak attack

It really feels like Christmas has crept up on me this year. One minute it was October, somehow I completely missed November, and then Christmas was looming out of the blue. I blame it partly on this weather - it definitely does not feel like summer here at all. It's rained on and off for the past few months, so the usual blistering hot days which herald the start of the holidays just haven't arrived.

To make matters worse, we still haven't put our tree up. You see, each year, we decide on a different colour theme. We decided on a turquoise and silver theme this year - but of course, when I went to buy new decorations, there was nothing to be found! Ah well, we'll manage somehow, and the tree will go up today one way or another. But then I saw this image over at the lovely Oliveaux:

...and was instantly smitten! How lovely is this, and what a nice change from the traditional wreath. I am officially in love, and think this would be just perfect for an 'Aussie' Christmas. But there's just one problem...now I need to add this to my list of impossible to find decorations!

Ah, the joys of the silly season....

21 today......

...actually, that should read 21 years ago today, as today is my wedding anniversary.

On a hot and humid Saturday afternoon, all those years ago (and it goes without saying that I was very young when I was married, some might say a child bride!) the adventure began. And it has been an adventure, which I should have guessed, judging from how the day panned out.

To give you some background info, Sydney was in the middle of a heat wave, and temperatures had been in the mid to high 30's all week (Celsius, that is). We'd chosen one of Sydney's oldest churches, the Garrison Church at The Rocks as our venue, and it really is such a beautiful place:

As we girls prepared early for the big day, starting with at the crack of dawn with a hairdressing appointment, the boys were still in bed. Of course.

In spite of organising a trial run, my hair looked more like this....

...than this:

..so after much angst, it was back to the hairdresser for a second attempt. Meanwhile, the boys were swimming in the best man's pool, eating pizza, and generally having a wow of a time, without an ounce of stress or worry.

Once my hair was somewhat presentable, and our makeup done, it was time to get dressed and wait for our cars to arrive. As I had four bridesmaids, I'd organised to have two vintage Rolls Royce, like this:

...but as the weather was so hot and humid, one of the cars - the perfectly colour-coordinated black and white car, broke down five minutes from my house. We had but one option - the girls had to drive themselves in a hot pink, 1964 VW station wagon...very similar to this one:

I'll set the scene for you:  four girls, dressed entirely in black (which was very daring for 1989 and quite unheard of), complete with Ray Bans, running to the car so we could make the 45 minute trip to the church on time. I'll never forget the look on the guests faces as they screamed around the corner, looking like four Penelope Pitstops. Priceless.

Meanwhile, let's check back in on the boys......

...oh look, here they are, having a few drinks at The Lord Nelson. And I have it on good authority (relayed with great relish by a few of the grand dames in attendance) there were a few last minute wardrobe changes, which took place out of the back of our campervan. Apparently in full view of said grand dames. Secretly, I think it was the biggest thrill I think they'd had in a long time.

After a lovely, (and thankfully non-eventful) ceremony, we finally made it to our reception venue - Dunbar House at Watson's Bay, on beautiful Sydney Harbour:

...where we did enjoy a great night, in spite of the soaring temperatures. I'm told my wedding cake was delicious:

...it's just a pity I didn't get to have any. It was very popular, so I'm glad all those many months, searching for the perfect sweet confection to round off the perfect day didn't go unappreciated.

After so much madness, drama and mayhem, wrapping up our big day was very bittersweet - for the very next day, we packed up all our worldly belongings and headed off to Queensland.

Looking back, I wouldn't change a thing. Those little mishaps, dramas and things that didn't go quite according to plan made the day so memorable, and we still laugh over them today. A bit like married life really - all those twists and turns usually turn out to be the things you remember the most. It's been a fabulous 21 years, with lots more 'adventures' along the way, and I'm looking forward to many more to come.

Hope you all have a great day, and as it's our anniversary (and my birthday too in a couple of days) we've got a big weekend ahead. What have you got planned?

New painting...at long last!

As I get ready to fly out the door for what seems like the millionth time today, I thought I'd pop in and share my latest painting. After sending myself almost blind trying to get this finished last night, I realised that:

  1. I cannot paint at night, unless I'm happy for coke-bottle goggles to be a part of my wardrobe in the not-too-distant future.
  2. Rushing a painting like this means blobs of blue paint appear in places they shouldn't. Which leads me to...
  3. Painting at night only ends in tears...see number two above.
**Edited to add: I think I should clarify that, after making a mess of my first attempt, I started from scratch with this one. Just in case you were thinking I was trying to pass off a patched-up, less than top notch painting!**

So after all that, here it is:

"Ginger Jar in Ming"
original watercolour on paper, 210mm x 297mm

At the moment, this one is on hold for a client, otherwise I'll list it on Etsy later today.

I'll try very hard to pop in to all your lovely blogs today as well, I'm having serious withdrawals!

See you soon,

Kerri
