White vs. Colour

I'm sure by now you're all aware of my love for white - I like nothing better than a clean canvas on which to layer artwork, fabric and texture. But as an artist, I adore colour, and every so often I'll come across an image that makes me question my whitewashing ways. Huka Lodge is an absolutely drop-dead gorgeous holiday retreat, and the dramatic colour scheme here is truly inspired. Of course, it helps when the natural landscape is so breathtaking, and the white woodwork really makes the teal pop:

Now, these next pics are perfect examples of how a similar room will look with a neutral colour scheme:

oh, I love this one too

  ...and the ceiling - divine

Did you notice that, although the colours are dramatic, they've been taken from the natural landscape, so they complement their setting perfectly - interior design at its best. I'm thinking that this gorgeous teal may be my new favourite winter accent colour. Oh, and another thing - wouldn't this be the perfect location for an international blogging convention?

Enjoy your day everyone,

  4. What inspirational rooms!

I love white - in fact I used it to revamp both my laundry and my living room, where I painted the floors white. You can see the before and after photos above.

I reckon most of those rooms are made by their ceilings - which I have also lamented here - why are ceilings so boring today??

  5. All of these pictures are absolutely gorgeous!! I especially love the bedroom. The soft aquas and greens are my favorite. But I am really liking the bold colors in the first pics that are mixed in with the softer colors. Very dramatic yet soothing!

I would so join you there if there were a blogging convention!!

  6. If that is the venue for the international blogging convention....sign me up! Isn't it gorgeous. While I am a fan of the neutral colour scheme I think the teal really shows a confidence in decorating and it works so perfectly. These are the blog images of the week! If there was an award for this...I'd give it to you. Have a great weekend Kerri.

  9. Oh Kerri what a beautiful find, I definately preferred the more neutral rooms, but the teal was striking!!! Now I wonder what they used for their kitchen splashback as they have my exact colourscheme & cupboard style...mmmmm...interesting!!
    Have an awesome weekend!!

  10. It really is lovely there, a magic spot. When I was a little girl it used to be Huka Pioneer Village, with horses and a Cobb & Co cart, and everyone dressed in costume. It was fantastic. But they have done a really nice job with the lodge.

    Royalty can't be wrong!

  14. Yes, Huka Lodge would be great for the convention! Any excuse to go to NZ is a good one! I have to say I like the more colourful shots, maybe it's the artist in me as well but I really respond to colour. I think I must see white as the base for adding in colours and patterns. I'm not sure I've ever really thought about it! Have a lovely weekend :)

I am a bit of a neutral girl myself and wish I was a little braver when it comes to colour in the home. The teal accent wall is gorgeous. Hope you have a great weekend. Michelle

  23. Can I please attend?! I think I was meant to own two homes, one which is all white, and one filled with color! I better go speak to Mr. Tide and inform him that he owes me a second home to decorate in all white! ;-)
