Plumes, paintings.. and Interlopers

I'm always on the lookout for a pretty feather. Living in a rural area, there are often lots to be found. My chicky babes are starting to moult, which means feathers galore. And our spectacularly coloured wild birds - rainbow lorikeets, galahs, cockatoos, and rosellas to name a few - often leave behind a lovely gift.

Lately, a little kingfisher has taken up residency in one of our gum trees. For those who aren't familiar with them, kingfishers are similar to mini kookaburras, but with lovely blue plumage. I'm hoping to find a feather left for me, but until then I've taken some artistic licence and painted my own version:

Speaking of artistic licence, sometimes paintings seem to take on a life of their own. One of my goals for the year is to leave some time each week just for creating - no set plan, no set ideas, just playing around. I'd been asked to paint some peacock feathers, and I have quite a few on the go, but this one took an unexpected turn. Instead of the usual brilliant blues and greens like the others I've done, this one is a study in white. Black & white is always a winner in my book, so why not white peacock feathers with a twist? This one is painted using gouache and ink for something different:

I've decided to release a limited number of original watercolours over the next few months, as well as more limited edition prints. As a rule, I tend to sell prints only, unless they're commissions. As I've had so many enquiries, please feel free to send me an email if you'd like to know when these are released, and I'll add you to my mailing list. Here's a few of my collection of feathers that are likely to make an appearance in a painting over the next few months. The white feathers (with the lovely yellow tint) are from our white cockatoos. They nest in a massive gum tree (commonly known around here as the Nursery Tree, as it seems every critter sets up shop in its many hollow branches), and every day I find feathers on the ground. So pretty. The darkest ones are from my hen, Gladys, who, along with her cronies, sits outside my studio while I paint:

Sadly, we're down to only three chooks nowdays. The Mr calls the henhouse the retirement village, as our guys seem to live longer than any others I've ever known. Our oldest (and sweetest) girl, Doris, died last year at the ripe old age of 13, which is pretty good going in chook years. Only one of the girls still lays, bless her, but I wouldn't be without them - their entertainment value alone is well worth it.

We seem to have a bit of mexican stand-off happening atm. The Interlopers (the newbies from next door) have taken to visiting our place, which is not taken too kindly by our lot. Don't need a chicken whisperer to know what they're thinking - the body language speaks volumes. Will try to get a good shot if I can - priceless.

We're a family of beach lovers, and the crew are partial to a spot of surfing. The Mr has just bought himself yet another board to add to his growing collection, and my youngest daughter has apparently found her next birthday present:

Flora and fauna

Flowers are a constant source of inspiration for me. The colours, shapes and perfumes are so many and varied I think it would take a lifetime to paint every one I loved. But I'm working on it. One of my girls works part-time in a florist, and she brings home something gorgeous every week. Bliss. Here's a little look at a few pieces I have on the go:

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by celebrity designer, Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Anyone familiar with the programme 'Million Dollar Decorators' will recognise Martyn, so I jumped at the chance to hear him chat about his work and his high-profile clients. He was delightful - warm, witty and funny, and his stories were very entertaining! Think tales of design consultations in Cher's ornate bed (once owned by Natasha Rambova, the lesbian wife of Rudolph Valentino), holidays with Elton John, and dinner with Sharon and Ozzie Osbourne. I was too enthralled to take a single photo, but here are a few I borrowed:

I was familiar with many of Martyn's celebrity clients, but the big surprise was the home of Kid Rock. Who knew a hard-core rocker would choose a pretty plantation-style home like this?

Whitewash

I'm sitting here, writing this post in what should be a hot, steamy Queensland summer, and instead it's been cold and raining for days. And to make matters worse, there have been next to no fabulous white beach houses to ogle - totally depressing. So I was very excited to find this gem. It would make the perfect beach getaway, and although it's a little sparsely furnished for my taste, the bones are very nice indeed.

One house, three ways, two magazines and a painting

Confused by the blog title? Of course you are....let me explain.

Ever since I started writing this blog, I've loved to post about beautiful homes. There is a gorgeous old Queenslander here in Brisbane that was listed for sale after a complete overhaul. A short time later, it was on the market again, with a completely different look (you can check out the full post here). Well, as luck would have it, it's now the home of our very own Melinda Boundy, of Lily G. Of course, it's looking better than ever now - so much so that it's just been featured in not one, but two magazines.

The above images are from the new Queensland Homes Gold Annual 2012, and were snapped by photographer John Downs (a really nice guy who was kind enough to send me these pics - thanks so much John).

I'm thrilled to say that the lovely Melinda (who has been one of my biggest supporters, and was the very first to stock my original artwork) commissioned an original Butterfly painting to hang in her living room. It's similar to 'The Monarchist', with some aqua accents to compliment her scheme. Here's a close-up...

How lovely is this frame Melinda chose? And by floating the paper on the mount, those lovely deckled edges were highlighted perfectly.

Kate + Flo

Great design really does stand the test of time, and Australia's very own Florence Broadhurst is a perfect example. Flo is recognised for her use of bold, vibrant colour and graphic prints, and local company Signature Prints has been instrumental in bringing her work to the forefront. Now, thanks to a collaboration with Kate Spade, the rest of the world will soon know what a talent she was:

I particularly love the jewellery - my lovely sister bought me some Kate Spade goodies on a recent trip to New York, and I'd love to add these babies to my new collection :)

One of my dearest friends has just ordered a Florence Broadhurst rug from Cardry's. She chose 'Japanese Floral' (as seen below) in a custom colour combination of red and tangerine - a striking combination and definite statement piece.

Rested, refreshed, and ready to go

Hi everyone, how are we all? Hope you had a wonderful holiday season - I've had a lovely break and now it's back into work mode and time to tackle all the projects I've been planning. Throughout the holidays, it's been busy as usual around here - a whirlwind of exam results, graduations, university applications, job interviews, birthdays....and that's just the kids. Exhausting! I'm looking forward to getting back to work - I really need the break.

My first job is to completely redesign my studio space. As I've mentioned before, I'm very messy when I'm creating. Try as I might, I just can't seem to keep everything tidy and organized. So I'm kicking off the year with a plan - storage, storage, and more storage! Of course, that involves research, and I've been collecting ideas, images, and inspiration wherever I can.

Look at that light! And I must find one of those trolleys - perfect.

Christmas wrap-up

I'm on the home stretch now....as of tomorrow, I'm officially on holidays. And I can't wait! It's been a huge year, albeit an exciting and enjoyable one, but now that it's drawing to a close I realise just how much I'm looking forward to kicking back and relaxing with my family. The pool is sparkling, the house is about to be cleaned top to bottom, and I'm sending the very last of my orders for the year. Just one last little bit of housekeeping: my Etsy store will remain open over the holidays, and orders are more than welcome, but any orders placed after today will not be sent until January 4th.

Right, now that's out of the way, I wish each and every one of you a wonderful Christmas, and I hope 2012 brings all you hope for. Tangerine Tango...and friends

I'm sure you all know by now that Pantone has declared Tangerine Tango the colour of the year for 2012. Bold and bright, it's no shrinking violet (pardon the pun), and a little can go a long way. It works beautifully with pink and aqua, and it's found its way into quite a few of my paintings lately. I'm working on this piece at the moment, with more to come.

I've also just used this fabric for a client in the pink colourway, and paired it with shades of green and aqua - very fresh and summery. But it looks equally lovely in tangy tangerine...

Orange works wonderfully with turquoise too. You may remember how Lauren from Porter Design Company framed my turquoise sea plant paintings with vivid tangerine orange mats for her room in the Stately Homes by the Sea Showhouse:

Inside Out

The latest issue of Inside Out magazine has just hit the stands, and one of the homes featured is a lovely white weatherboard in beautiful Palm Beach. It was for sale just recently, and I couldn't wait to get a better look at it in all its glossy glory. If I have a pet peeve, it's a lack of photos in a real estate listing - don't they know how much I love a good stickybeak at pretty houses? Anyway, this house ticks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned - lashings of white inside and out, an artist studio (perfect!), and a self-contained guest wing/teenage retreat - my ideal house. Add to that a killer spot on the Northern Beaches, and it's a hands-down winner.

It will be quite hard to distil it down into a design that's just right for us, as there are so many gorgeous options to choose from. I have drawings and plans, sketches and ideas, all of which need to come together. Watch this space for more as it all (hopefully) comes together.

When I first came across Pinterest, to say I was underwhelmed was a bit of an understatement. It seemed like yet another thing to add to the must-have-if-you're-serious-about-your-online-presence....and all too much like hard work. But then, I spent a bit of time navigating through and found that, regardless of what it was originally designed for, it's an absolutely brilliant way of collating and storing all of those inspiration pics - and even better, it links to where they were found. In other words, it's amazing. So now I'm hooked, and there's so much fabulousness on there, I can't begin to tell you. So I'll just show you. Much better that way.

It's funny how a break in routine can spark a frenzy of activity. You see, one of my babies is off at schoolies this week. For those who aren't familiar with schoolies, it marks the celebration of the end of high school for thousands of Aussie teenagers - I'm guessing it's probably similar to Spring Break in the US? Anyway, it means hoards of kids head off, often to the Gold Coast in Queensland, for a week of non-stop partying. What that also means is a week of no sleep and endless worry for the parents. And if I can't sleep anyway, I need to stay busy and painting for me is the ultimate stress-buster. Hence the flurry of new work - at least there's one upside to this whole situation. I'm still counting the days until my chicks are all back in the nest (four to go. And my chicks will cringe when they read this!), but until then, here's the latest - a long-overdue addition to my Martha Stewart series...oops, I mean blue and white series:

Artist Marcella Kaspar's Sydney home...an update

Regular readers of my blog may remember my previous posts (here and here) on the beautiful homes of Australian artist Marcella Kaspar and her builder husband, Mark Cooper. The first home has since been sold to design maven Maggie Tabberer, with the couple then going on to build an almost identical replica, albeit with a darker and moodier vibe. It's just been featured in Marie Claire Australia magazine, and I couldn't miss the chance to revisit it - it's one of my all-time faves.

Marcella's stunning peony painting has inspired me to paint my own version to hang above my bed - of course, pics will be shared soon.

One of my favourite elements of both homes is the frangipani outside the main bedroom. Another idea I've stolen for my place :)

Ali's gorgeous home (and my art!) in Australian Home Beautiful

One of the best things about blogging is connecting with lovely readers like Ali. Earlier this year, I sent some original paintings her way; she was adding the finishing touches to her new home in the NSW Southern Highlands - one of the loveliest places on earth. And what a beautiful home it is. Featured on The House of Turquoise blog, and now in the latest issue of Australian Home Beautiful, I was thrilled when she contacted me to commission some original watercolours. Ali chose my Sea Coral in Ruby, and Sea Fan in Ruby to complement the lovely grey/blue in her bathroom....

A home as gorgeous as this was bound to attract attention, so it came as little surprise when Ali told me it was to be featured in Home Beautiful magazine. It was quite an impatient wait - the photo shoot took place early this year - but when you see the results I think you'll agree it was totally worth it.

Ali and her family have since moved on, and are enjoying an extended trip around Australia. But I'm guessing there'll be another beautiful home on the horizon when she returns...and I can't wait! Oh, and btw - Ali's sister Mel is of Georgica Pond fame - style obviously runs in the family.

Some serious soul-searching...

I was discussing art with a client once, and I was showing her the different things I'd done in the past. There were huge abstracts and floral works on canvas, delicate watercolours on paper, graphic black and white pieces, and a few figurative bits and bobs. She commented that she'd never guess they were all done by the same artist. Which, if I'm honest, threw me a little bit. Did that mean I was too scattered in my approach? Did it all look a bit hit and miss? Should I work on developing a particular 'style' and stick with it? I'd never really though about it too much before, and had always just painted what I liked, whatever that may be. Which seems completely natural to me, but maybe that's not the best way to approach this business. I mulled it over for a while, trying to decide what to do.

Then, a discussion with a friend put things in a whole new perspective. We both often joke that we really need a good half-dozen houses, just so we can decorate them in all the styles we like. Breezy and beachy, clean and modern, heritage, country....they all hold a certain appeal, and I could quite happily live in my version of any one of them. So why not art? Who's to say I need to stick to one style - surely there are no rules? I like to rotate my paintings with the seasons; darker, moodier pieces for winter, fresh and bright for summer. And why not combine lots of styles into one glorious mish-mash? I decided to go in search of the best examples of this approach, and think these pics prove without a doubt that 'eclectic', although done to death, really is rather fabulous when done right.

So, I'd love to hear what you think? And if anyone is a marketing-guru extraordinaire, then I'd also love your thoughts from a business perspective. But at the end of the day, I am who I am, and this is how I work.

Thanks guys, you're the best. Hit me with your best advice...I'm ready.

New in Blue

I know I've said it a million times before, but I just can't go past the classic blue and white combo. Beachy or traditional, dramatic or dreamy, there's a blue to suit every mood. I'm working on lots of new and exciting paintings, and first cab off the rank is a piece in a lovely new shade of blue - French blue to be exact. Here she is:

I've just about finished a large version of this piece in denim blue (actually, I think the denim would look even better in Sig's place!) and also, I have a raspberry version on order too.

Over the next couple of weeks, I have some really exciting new pieces to share with you all - some are new additions to my existing range...think more of my blue and white series, new sea corals, butterflies and feathers... and others are brand-spankin' new paintings in new styles and designs. Can't wait to share them with you all - of course, I'll reveal all as soon as they're ready.

Designer digs

I first came across the work of building designer Dion Gadd when it was featured in Queensland Homes magazine a few years ago. Since then, it seems his work has gone from strength to strength, and with a recent win for the 2010 HIA-CSR Queensland Home of the Year, it looks like the sky's the limit. This latest home in Settler's Cove, Noosa, is a fabulous example of how to work with a sloping block, not against it - and the results speak for themselves.

I really like this take on the modern Queenslander. Many traditional elements are still featured; weatherboards, timber floors, and louvre windows, but it's all wrapped up in a contemporary, modern package. Very nice indeed. It's been a mammoth few weeks. As you can probably tell, my poor little blog has taken a back seat to everything else that's been going on. But even though there's been precious little blog action, I've been painting like a woman possessed! For those of you who follow me on Facebook, you'll have seen a sneak peek of the biggest painting I've done for quite a while. This bad boy is 1.5m x 3m long (around 5' x 10') - a real statement piece. The canvas was custom-stretched, specialist art transport was needed due to its sheer size....but it was totally worth it. I absolutely love it, but more importantly, my gorgeous client Helen loves it too. Here it is:

We did plan to have it delivered and hung all on the same day, but there were a few hiccups which meant it was only hung today. I'll be heading over next week to get some lovely in-situ shots, and I'll post those as soon as I can. I'm so looking forward to seeing it in place in Helen's beautifully restored Queenslander - very exciting!

In spite of being absolutely swamped at the moment, I couldn't resist sharing my latest painting. I've just finished this commission - a new butterfly to add to my growing collection. I love the combination of green and aqua - fresh and pretty, it's the perfect way to bring a little colour into your home:

2011 Coastal Living Ultimate Beach House

I've loved Coastal Living magazine since I first stumbled upon a copy in my local newsagent a few years ago. It's right up my alley - gorgeous beach houses feature in every issue; from the quintessential shack, right through to homes where the word 'shack' definitely doesn't apply! The 2011 Ultimate Beach House is now open for inspection, and was designed by none other than Phoebe Howard - so you know it'll be beautiful. Come on in and I'll take you on a tour.....

Just a quick update on the commission for the lovely H. Here's a little look at the underpainting as of last last week, although it's come along significantly since then. I'll share the finished painting as soon as it's signed, sealed and delivered, but until then, here's a snippet:

I'm making a huge mess, but it's so much fun working big again. I'll be adding some of these larger works to the exhibition I'm having later this year too, so stay tuned for updates.

It's school holidays in this part of the world, and I managed to squeeze in a long-overdue trip to the beach last week. It was a gorgeous sunny day on the sunshine coast, with a warm breeze, and lots of seafood for lunch.....doesn't get much better than that.

A blank canvas

You might remember in my last post I mentioned I was about to start on a commission for a lovely client? Well, I thought this might be the perfect time to share a little of how I go about painting a commissioned work - before I forget all about taking pics along the way.

here she is...a nice (big) blank canvas

My lovely client, H, spoke to me about creating a painting for a large wall in her beautifully renovated Queenslander. If possible, I like to visit the client on-site - that way, I can get a feel for the space, the light, and the bones of the room itself. This painting will make a real statement - at 3m x 1.5m, it's a large piece, and will be on view from the minute you walk in the front door.

We then had a chat about her ideas, what colours she'd like included - and just as importantly, any she definitely didn't want. She has a great mix of traditional and modern in her home, as she's retained the original charm and character of her Queenslander, but she's also included some clean, modern elements too. To complement the original VJ walls, she chose a traditional, full-blown floral curtain:

..and picked up the olive green from the pattern, using it as an accent wall colour in the central hall, and also for the glass splashback in the kitchen. Elsewhere is a natural white, keeping things nice and airy.

So, after discussing the options, we decided on a modern abstract design, incorporating the raspberry, red/pink and olive green from her curtains, as well as some complimentary tones. Once that was sorted, I sent through a series of mock-ups of my ideas, to make sure we were on the same page, and also to provide a visual of what I'm thinking. I've found this really helps both me and the client - I'm a really visual person, but I realise not everyone works that way. By doing so, it really helps to iron out any misunderstandings before we're too far down the track.

So, that's enough from me - I have painting to do. I'll post more pics once the piece is all signed, sealed and delivered. Can't wait to share the finished painting with you all - and I have to say, it's a lot of fun to be working on such a large scale piece again. Supersizing isn't always a bad thing you know :)

Black and white is a classic combo that never goes out of fashion. Throw them together into a stripe, and it's even better. I've been seeing this pic all over the place lately, and it was love at first sight:

I love black and white awnings. So fresh, yet chic and classic at the same time. And how better to frame a lovely window, or door, than with one of these arrangements.

Palm Beach beauty

I have to say, lately my local Aussie magazines are hitting it out of the park. This month's Home Beautiful not only featured Hayley's lovely home, but also this Palm Beach stunner. I recognised it straight away - it was for sale not so long ago, and it was straight to the inspiration folder. It ticks all the boxes for me, so let's take a little tour:

As usual, it's been bedlam around here. My two youngest are in the middle of exams, which means lots of trips back and forth between home and school. And then there's the tennis, which of course, I had to watch to support Our Sam in her first Grand Slam win. Maybe now it's all over I can concentrate on work. Speaking of which, I have a fabulous commission that I can't wait to get started on - a 1.5m x 3m abstract for a lovely client. So looking forward to getting stuck into a nice big canvas for a change. I'll post some pics as soon as it's photo worthy - can't wait!

Veranda's House of Windsor

I don't know about you, but I can't wait for the official unveiling of Windsor Smith's latest project. Windsor is one of my very favourite designers (and if you know me, that's a big call), and she's really outdone herself here. In conjunction with Veranda magazine, and assisted by a few of her fabulous designer friends, Windsor has designed the most amazing property - complete with designer stables, gravel entryway, master suite; the ultimate fantasy home. What I wouldn't give to have been there in person at the grand opening....but instead, I'll be content with living vicariously through those who were...

What I really love about this house is its relaxed feel. I know it's a luxurious, high-end designer home, but it really has warmth and charm. The emphasis is on family (ok, albeit a very well-off family), but nonetheless, I think that Windsor's vision of creating a home that brings people together has been achieved in spectacular fashion. Custom prints....you choose the colour

Finding artwork to suit your style and colour scheme can be tricky. Often, you'll fall in love with a piece, but the colours don't work, or the size is wrong....you know how it goes. I've just finished some prints for a client, who requested I match them to a paint colour - Benjamin Moore Woodlawn Blue. Of course, the colours may not be exactly the same, but I have to say, I really like the way these have turned out....soft, pretty and in a lovely, green/blue hue:

I think the entrance to a home is really important - it can say a lot about the people who live there. Whether it sports a fire-engine red door, a gated courtyard, a shot of bright colour....first impressions count. While we work on our house plans, I'm thinking of giving our existing door a little makeover. It's solid timber, with glass sidelights, but it's really boring and badly in need of a spruce-up. But now, the million-dollar question....what colour to choose? So many colours....and only one front door.

Next time someone tells me to clam up, I'll take them literally. I've always loved the use of giant clam shells in decorating (as long as they're sustainably harvested, of course, or better still, fabulously faux), and I'm thinking I might need to incorporate a few into my design scheme.

Anna Spiro often uses shells in her lovely vignettes..

...and I love how Stuart Membery's used them for his gorgeous pooches...

..they look great as a centrepiece..

...in the bathroom...

...a summer fireplace...

...or glammed up with a little zebra print...

But I can't believe I've missed so many other fabulous uses! Of course, they're great for storing everything...

A flying visit to Melbourne

I've just spent a few days in Melbourne, visiting the trade shows. It's been a long time between visits, and I'd forgotten what a beautiful city it is. I had my youngest daughter with me as well, and we had a fantastic time, wandering through the laneways and visiting the hundreds of cafes and eateries along the way. Here's a little snippet of our trip...

Here she is, leading the way (we were on a mission to Haigh's). Needless to say, we had to buy an extra bag to bring our choccie stash back home.

I really wanted to visit Katrina and Aimee at The Block (go girls!!), but just couldn't squeeze it in (and the 30,000-strong crowd was a bit too much to tackle). Regardless, it was so nice to re-visit Melbourne after all this time, and I can't wait to go back again. Next time I'm shopping just for me :)

The big picture

The plan for our new place is starting to come together. The idea is to bring a little bit of Palm Beach to Brisbane, throw in some Hamptons style, a touch of traditional Queenslander...basically, you could throw all the houses I've blogged about into a blender, and the result would be close to perfect. I really like the details of this Palm Beach beauty, which was featured in Home Beautiful magazine earlier this year - lovely details, light and airy....perfect for our tropical climate.

Curiosity Shop

It probably comes as no surprise that I love vintage books. My favourites are those on natural history, and I love scouring dusty old bookshops for these treasures. And I guess it's a natural progression that some of my favourite painting subjects come from nature. I'm preparing for a solo exhibition later this year (very exciting! I'll share all the deets soon) and now that I'm almost rid of this rotten flu (three weeks and counting) I've been experimenting with some new ideas. Here's a look at a little watercolour study I've just finished:

This is the first in a new series, and there are lots more to come. The colours are so gorgeous, and as well as these beautiful blues, there will be vibrant yellows, oranges, black and white - something for everyone. To me, these look best en mass, and I'll be framing the originals with simple, streamlined black frames to really make the colours pop. There are quite a few surprises that I'll reveal closer to the exhibition date (think big, bold and beautiful!), so if you'd like me to add you to my mailing list, drop me a line or message me, and you'll be the first to know.

I've been laid low with the dreaded lurgy for the past couple of weeks, which, as well as being totally inconvenient, has meant that I've had little energy for anything other than coughing and spluttering (and, if you ask the clan, they'd probably add whingeing as well). But I digress. One good thing that's come from my convalescence is that I managed to find the designer behind a room I've had saved in my files for ages.

I had a lovely message from Brissie designer and fellow blogger Daryl Wark, which in turn led me to his gorgeous blog. As I settled in for a good read, I came across this post on South African designer John Jacob Zwiegelaar (which, coincidentally, Daryl found through Judy at Verandah House), and there was the black and white room I'd had saved for ages. Even better, it lead to this website, which was full of stunning, black & white interiors.

What I love about a black and white (and neutral) scheme is that you can always throw in some colour when you feel like a change, or go completely monochromatic - the options are endless. Take this last room - it would look equally great with some mismatched cushions, an abstract painting or two, and a few bright accessories. I love colour, but my fickle nature means I always stick to a neutral scheme for the bones of a room, and add pops of colour with pieces that can be changed quickly, and relatively inexpensively - artwork etc. Thanks Daryl for the heads up, and seriously, do yourself a favour - head on over to Daryl's blog - lots of goodies there, let me tell you. My fave post - how to keep your vintage Louis Vuitton looking great...but not too 'new'. Fabulous to the max.

Stately Homes by the Sea - the room reveal at last!

Back in May, I posted about the Stately Homes by the Sea Showhouse. At last, I can now show you photos of the room that Lauren Guarcello of Porter Design Company put together, and what a job she's done. Lauren commissioned me to paint a series of watercolours in vibrant turquoise to complement her scheme, and I think the results speak for themselves.

One gorgeous home three ways...well almost

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you may remember this post, when I featured one of my favourite houses. It was originally built by artist Marcella Kaspar and her husband, Mark Cooper, and later sold to Maggie Tabberer. Well, Marcella and Mark have since built another home, with a similar floorplan, but this time they decided to change things up a little, and the results are just stunning.

So, which do you prefer? Dark and moody, or bright and beautiful? I love nothing more than seeing a house like this, which has fabulous bones and great style, decorated so differently. Love to know what you think.

New blog on the block

I always enjoy finding new blogs to add to my ever-growing reading list, and this latest addition is fast becoming one of my favourites. I was commissioned to paint some original sea coral paintings for Melinda, and from her lovely thank you email I found her gorgeous blog - Georgica Pond. Reading through her posts quite literally stopped my in my tracks - almost each and every one of her inspiration photos was either one I had stashed away myself, or wish I had! Melinda has recently moved into a new home and is about to embark on a renovation, and from the looks of things, I'm going to love following along on her journey.

She and her family built this stunner on a hundred acre property in the NSW Southern Highlands.....

...but they've since moved to Sydney into this renovator's delight...

I've been waiting very impatiently for the latest issue of Ivy and Piper to go live.... it's a fantastic magazine, put together by the very talented local duo of Melanie Parker and Elizabeth Raptis. But even more exciting is that one of my favourite local shops, Hamptons Home Living, has been featured in the latest issue. And if you look closely, there's some artwork on the walls that you just might recognise.

All that glitters....

When I'm designing a large piece, I sometimes paint a little watercolour study first, to play with colours and proportions. I'm working on a large canvas at the moment, and wanted to add a little bit of shimmer. This watercolour is my 'first draft' so to speak, so I added a bit of drama with the slash of gold through the centre:

I then added a few more gold accents here and there, just to pull the design together.

(sorry about the terrible pics - my poor old camera is on its last legs, and my new SLR is on order - can't wait!)

I took a leaf (pardon the pun) out of Shannon Fricke's very stylish book, and picked some pretty weeds, in the perfect shade of yellow, to pop into my pink dotty jug. A little bright spot in a rather grey, winters' day!

Feather your nest

I've always been a bit of a collector. As a kid, I used to keep little white pebbles (or 'lucky stones' as we called them), leaf skeletons, coral and shells from our beach holidays (along with a few poor little hermit crabs that I used to stash in the car without my parents' knowledge )....and feathers. I always loved finding feathers, particularly white ones, as my Nan used to tell me they were good luck. The gorgeous patterns and colours always appealed to my artistic side, too. So here's a little feather study I did the other day:

They are lovely, aren't they? I personally would never use feathers unless I found them myself - I hate the thought of how some of them are harvested, but they're undeniably beautiful.

I know the ultimate bowerbird, Sibella Court, is partial to the odd feather or twelve...

Pavilion Style Beach House

I'm still in the planning stages for our new house design, and one style I keep coming back to over and over is a series of pavilions. It makes perfect sense for our climate - hot, humid summers, and mild winters. We have the space, and I'd love to wrap the house around the pool, so when I saw this house in Noosa, it ticked all the boxes.

Hmm, pity we've just given our pool an overhaul..I'm liking those steps - very clever

Not exactly my style furnishing-wise, but the wide-plank timber floors are divine

LOVE the pivot louvred doors...one for the files for sure

...and another must-have are those clerestory windows...perfect for Queenlsand summers

ok, so ignore the artwork, but I love the way the house wraps around the pool...and I love the Pandanus tree in the middle of the deck too.

So, my plan is slowly but surely taking shape. I like quite a few different styles, and I'm aiming to blend some of them together into a cohesive design. It's like putting together a great big jigsaw puzzle, adding pieces as I go. My biggest dilemma - not being sidetracked by all the fantastic options out there.

Blue and white times two

I know my posts often feature blue and white, but what can I say, I love it. So here's the latest painting in my blue and white china series - "China Blue".

But this isn't the only new blue and white piece around here. On the weekend, I was shopping with Mum and stumbled across this beauty:

I'm not sure if you can tell from the pic, but this vase is pretty big...almost 60cm high. I spotted it in a market stall, and couldn't race across fast enough to snap it up. And even better, I paid the princely sum of $26 for it - total bargain. Of course, mum is trying to steal it off me, but for now I'm not parting with it.

there are four panels around the vase, each with a different scene. Gorgeous.

So, what do you think of my bargain buy? I used to go antiquing every weekend, visiting junk shops and garage sales, until my shed was full to the brim (actually, it still is). This was my first buy for quite a while, so maybe I should get out there again. Probably best if I don't mention that to the Mr, especially with a reno on the horizon.

My kitchen makeover on Apartment Therapy

As an interesting aside, I'm always curious to see the comments left on posts like this. The majority of the kitchens featured all had one thing in common - the painting of timber/timber look cabinetry, and it seems that it can be a contentious issue. I noticed that a number of comments questioned the choice to paint:

..."why does everyone slather white paint to cover their natural wood cabinetry? some do make sense, but #8 looks like gorgeous wood to me. it seems like a shame to cover it up."

Now don't get me wrong...I love timber. I love the detail in the grain, the texture....but I have no problem painting it if need be. In our kitchen, the cabinetry combined with exposed brick, pine ceilings and dark stone floors, making the room dark, dingy and uninviting...and completely depressing. I've noticed that men, in particular, hate the idea of covering wood with paint...maybe something to do with the old 'man cave' theory?

To me, having an inviting, bright and airy home, filled with natural light, is the ideal. One of the most telling comments on my makeover was that many people had never noticed that we have a skylight in the room. The dark surfaces totally absorbed every last ounce of light. Now, the room is light and bright, and my only regret is that I didn't do it years ago.

So, I'd love to know what you all think about painting timber. Are you all for it, or do you think it's totally taboo? Or maybe you think it's a fad, and we'll all be reaching for the paint stripper and varnish?

Inspired

Sometimes, inspiration can be hard to come by. I've had times in the past when painting has been a torturous process, and I've come to learn that often, it's other stuff going on in our lives that blocks creativity. Stress, upheaval...you name it, it can wreak havoc. Of course, these things can act as a catalyst for some artists, but for me, it's rarely the case. Lately, it's been the opposite - I have so many ideas, there's just not enough time to paint everything I'd like to. But that's quite a nice problem to have, so I'm not complaining. Here's an abstract I've just finished...a little departure from the detailed watercolour pieces.

Not sure how well you can see the detail in this pic, but the circular patterning is in metallic gold. This is a smaller piece, and the first in a new series. In an upcoming post, I'll show you how to combine different works - abstracts on canvas, framed prints, watercolours etc to create a really unique and personal gallery. It's always nice to see rooms that have been put together over time, and it's also perfect if you can't afford to splash out on large artworks - a collection can be added to when time and money allow.

So, back to painting. I'd no sooner put the finishing touches to this piece when I saw this pic over on Jessie Lauren's gorgeous blog:

So, for those of you who've wondered about the process of creating art, I'm sure I'm not your usual case study! I'm terribly fickle at times, and probably a little scattered in my approach, but hey, that's just how it is. And it never gets boring, so that makes it fun too - there's always something new catching my eye.

Shannon Fricke workshop

Now that Blogger is finally back online (hallelujah!) I can tell you about the fabulous weekend I spent at one of Shannon Fricke's workshops. And to make it even better, I also had the pleasure of the lovely Kerry's company for the weekend. We headed on down to Byron on Friday afternoon, spent some time shopping before turning in for the night at the Atlantic Guest House. You may remember I blogged about it here, but if not, here's a reminder:

Bright and early on Friday morning, we, along with ten other lovely ladies, headed on to Bangalow for the workshop. Shannon was so warm and welcoming, and shared her styling tips and tricks of the trade with us...what a great way to spend the day!

Thanks Shannon for a fantastic day, and thanks ladies, it was so great to meet you all. Now, the hard part....which workshop should I book next?

Stately Homes by the Sea

Those of you who follow my Facebook page may remember that, a little while ago, I sent nine original paintings off the the US. It was just after my Martha feature, and excitement levels were running high. For those of you who haven't seen them on Facebook (you can 'like' my page for all the juicy news and sneak peeks!) here's a little look:

Designer Lauren Guarcello, of Porter Design Company, was kind enough to include my paintings in her room for the show house, and from the photos she's sent me her room is absolutely stunning! I can't share the pics just yet (let's just say Lauren's gorgeous work hasn't gone unnoticed, and will be featured in print very soon)

Something's Gotta Give...

Hi all, how's things? I've been under the weather for the past week, so I spent the time planning and plotting the design of my new/revamped house. Like many millions of other die-hard fans, I fell in love with the film "Something's Gotta Give"... in particular, that stunning Hamptons home of Erica's. I've watched the DVD endlessly to savour every little morsel of the design....so many gorgeous details, I could go on for ever. But there are a few common elements that crop up again and again in my inspiration folders, that will definitely make their way into my plan.

1. Comfy white slipcovered sofas...and a blue and white striped rug

2. Windows...one of the most important features of a home, IMHO. Love these, complete with transoms (hello A-M!!)

3. White subway tiles, stainless appliances, feature lighting

4. This bedroom....quite perfect actually. I might change the windows for french doors, but that's about it.

I thought I'd found every post ever written on this house, so imagine how excited I was to stumble upon a floor plan, drafted by a fan and shared on Linda Merrill's fabulous blog, Silver Screen Surroundings. Although it's a fan's interpretation of the design, it's a pretty good one if you ask me. Pity there's not an actual plan from the movie set...if anyone manages to come across one, I'd love it if you'd share it!

Now, my design won't slavishly copy this house....as I mentioned in my previous post, I have lots of other design influences to incorporate. But really, they all have these elements in common, so I'm sure I can blend them all together and come up with something nice. Once I add a little quintessential Aussie beach house loveliness...

A little something I've been working on...

Morning all,
Hope you all had a lovely Easter break. It was so nice to kick back, relax and enjoy the extended long weekend, and generally take it easy. I took the chance to work on my renovation/building plans, so the first port of call was my chock-a-block full inspiration folder. I actually have quite a few - some where I keep all my tear sheets, and my computer files, where I stash everything and anything that takes my fancy. I spent some time revisiting my favourites, and came across these pics of Collette Dinnigan's two gorgeous Paddington homes. I've posted about these before, but they're so lovely I couldn't resist going back for another helping.

Now, my home is no heritage sandstone cottage, and somehow I'm guessing my budget is somewhat more limited than Collette's, but there's plenty here that could work in any home. A restrained palette, clean lines, but a relaxed, comfortable feel at the same time. Very nice indeed, and inspiration galore, in more ways than one. More on that later!

Yep, Easter is definitely on its way, and here at home I've been busy organizing a few little decorations to make the break more festive.

I whipped up this little Easter egg tree - nothing too elaborate of course, just a little something to set the mood.

And then my good friend Martha called, and we had a little chat about what she could do to decorate her little farm.....she always likes the place to look nice, and I was only too happy to give her a few tips. That's how I roll.

But by far the most taxing job I'll be tackling over the next few days is the yearly Easter Egg Hunt. It's a family tradition that we've carried on since the crew were babies, and in spite of the fact that they're all well into their teens, each year we hide a stash of eggs in every conceivable place throughout our two-plus acre property. That's the easy part. The hard part is making up more cryptic and clever clues every year, and finding new places to stash the eggs.

Our biggest shed is always a great place, but not sure the eggs would last too long this year....we have a visitor:

He's a carpet snake - completely harmless, although not if you're a possum...or a chook. This guy left us a little present a week or so ago - a newly shed skin. It measures 11 feet from head to tail, so he's a reasonable size. Our neighbours have lost a few of their chickens lately, including their rooster, and they found the culprit at the scene of the crime, with a suspicious rooster-shaped lump in his belly. So I'm guessing a few easter eggs wouldn't stand a chance.

Anyhoo, I'm off to make a start on the clues. What do you guys have planned for the Easter break? Any fabulous family traditions? I'd love to hear all about them.

This new painting has been a long time coming. Sometimes, I start four or five paintings at once, and then finish them when the mood takes me. But as bright colour has been the order of the day lately, it was nice to put the finishing touches to this piece.

Now that I have my internet back (for how long who knows, but I'm trying to make the most of it while it lasts) I'm planning on spending some time catching up on all my blog reading. I've missed all your news over the past few days, so I'm looking forward to reading all your posts.
